November 9, 2007
Las Piñas City was named one of the nine finalists to the prestigious Galing Pook awards among local governments in the country for innovate programs that provide shelter and livelihood to homeless urban settlers.
Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar was personally informed by Ms. Veronica Villavicencio, Gawad Galing Pook national selection committee member, and Pamela Grafilo, Galing Pook manager, recently when the panel conducted an onsite interview and evaluation of the existing communities.
The city has put in place a total of 23,000 individual families in various communities, with Barangay CAA-BF Int’l comprising the largest number.
Las Piñas has been implementing on site development in identified community relocation sites comparative to a private subdivision with all the basic essential necessities like water and electricity. It has also day care centers, health centers and elementary and high schools.
Aguilar said his administration prioritizes housing projects in line with its commitment to uplift the living conditions of his constituents and provide shelter to the less fortunates.
The city government has initiated the Integrated Shelter and Land Tenure for Urban Poor to effectively reduce poverty incidence and homelessness in the city. With the urban settlement goes livelihood training for housewives and other jobless heads of the family to complete the on-site development idea of the mayor.
The mayor vowed to continue to implement related projects to meet the shelter requirements of the most needy citing that taxpayers money are not put to waste.
Meanwhile, Aguilar commended the staff and personnel of the city Urban Poor Affairs Office for their dedication to implement various projects to reduce if not limit the growing number of informal settlers.
The Gawad Galing Pook feat is the latest award received by the city government. Just recently, the National Housing Authority conferred to Las Piñas City the Gawad Parangal in recognition of its significant contributions in upgrading the lives of its citizens.
The award was handed over during the agency’s 23rd anniversary, in line with the celebration of the “Shelter Month”. Former Mayor Imelda T. Aguilar received the award in behalf of her husband Mayor Vergel A. Aguilar. (END)
