Aguilar warns traffic chief to put order on city streets or be sacked
September 7, 2007
Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar ordered the city traffic police chief to implement order and bring back smooth flow of vehicular traffic along Zapote-Alabang Road and the inner streets or be relieved from post.
In an order to P/Inspector Juanito Rafael, city traffic chief, the mayor demands strict enforcement of traffic rules and regulations, particularly the use of pedestrian crossing, loading and unloading zones, illegal parking and all other forms of obstruction, and dismantling of illegal terminals.
Aguilar stressed on the apprehension of abusive PUV drivers particularly the bus drivers with total disregard of the loading and unloading areas for passengers along Alabang-Zapote road, the city’s major thoroughfare.
To support the move, the mayor also sent a letter to Metro Manila Development Authority chairman Bayani Fernando requesting to share their expertise in traffic management with the city traffic enforcers.
Aguilar instructed Rafael to mobilize the more than 100 traffic enforcers to strengthen the implementation as he expressed disappointment over the traffic congestion along Z-A Road, especially during rush hours, even with the opening of the city-initiated alternate route.
Las Piñas has issued the 2007 Friendship Route strickers to bonafide residents as access pass in selected private villages and subdivisions being an alternate route in going to Alabang or Parañaque and even Cavite. The idea is to decongest flow of vehicle along the major thoroughfare that could no longer accommodate the volume of traffic, particularly during weekdays.
The mayor also wants disciplinary action imposed against pedestrians who are imprudently cross the road, ignoring both the traffic signs and traffic enforcers. He urged them to cross only the designated pedestrian lanes and escalator-overpasses for their safety and comfort.
Aguilar also ordered the mounting of additional and highly visible traffic signages and posting of traffic enforcers on major intersections especially during rush hours. (END)
