Aguilar orders police to strengthen measure
August 31, 2007
Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar ordered the police to double its effort in ensuring peace and order in the city through conduct of check points in strategic areas, and reinforce police visibility to deter any form of criminal activity.
Aguilar wants a deployment of more police on foot patrol particularly along the schools, business or commercial areas, and some strategic locations perceived to be possible security risk to ensure protection of the public.
The mayor calls for a realistic security procedure to be adopted even as the city police maintains a “generally peaceful and under control situation” peace and order report.
“We are not supposed to be just doing the lip service when it comes to ensuring the protection and security of the people, with or without the absence of a threat,” Aguilar said.
He said contingency measures must be put in place, on top of deployment of the elements of Special Weapons and Tactic Units (SWAT) in areas identified to be possible targets of some unscrupulous elements.
The order came as Aguilar expressed dissatisfaction over the city police force’s even as the local police reported the arrest of three suspected drug pushers in a buy-bust operation recently.
At the same time, Aguilar urged city residents and civic groups to be more vigilant in helping the authorities maintain the city’s campaign against crime more effective, and encouraged homeowners’ associations to cooperate with the local authorities in keeping the peace and order.
He pointed out that residents are a big help in information gathering and surveillance and even policing their area or village against criminal elements.
Residents have been active in the monitoring of any unusual activity in their respective areas and the immediate response of local officials in the city’s 20 barangays. (END)
