Aguilar warns water refilling stations, restaurants vs. unsafe water
July 19, 2007
Las Piñas City Mayor Vergel “Nene” Aguilar issued a warning to owners of 538 water refilling stations in the city, as well as restaurants and fastfood chains, of possible revocation of their permit and closure of establishment if found to be violating the water safety standards to the detriment of the people’s health.
The mayor also directed the sanitary inspection unit of the City Health office to strictly monitor compliance of concerned businesses, on top of the regular inspections, to ensure that no contaminants are found in their water supply to prevent contamination or possible outbreak of water borne diseases.
“I am calling the attention of all water refilling station owners of their responsibility to deliver safe water supply to the consumers as I will not allow anything to jeopardize the health of our people. There is no compromise to the people’s health over business or profit,” Aguilar said.
In a directive, Aguilar urged owners to subject their water supply system to the monthly bacteriological examination to make sure it is not contaminated with fecal or coliform bacteria.
Their workers are also required to wear hairnet, surgical gloves and mask and boots, and maintain a clean and sanitized water containers and vending areas, stipulated as among the conditions when applying for a permit to operate business.
As a requirement, said establishment must comply with the bi-annual physico chemical analysis by a water laboratory duly accredited by the Department of Health (DOH) to determine the mineral contents or other contaminants in their water supply.
Water laboratory test can also be provided by the Las Pinas District Hospital.
Aguilar’s order was issued following reported incidents of amoebic dysentery which afflicted some residents in Cavite, and water borne ailments which afflicted residents in other Metro areas resulting from the use of unsafe water. (END)
