Aguilar cautions residents against dengue
July 16, 2007
Las Piñas City, MM - Las Piñas City Mayor Vergel Aguilar has directed the city health office to conduct a massive information campaign in the grassroots on dengue and other water-borne diseases with the onset of the rainy season.
Aguilar said that while a massive information campaign is being conducted in schools and different extended communities, residents must also observe cleanliness in their household to prevent the outbreak of the disease.
School officials and teachers are also encouraged to include in their health subject the campaign on dengue and other communicable diseases.
Cleanliness, according to Aguilar, is the only way where dengue and other water-borne diseases can be prevented.
Aguilar also urged city residents to follow the “4-S” campaign initiated by the Department of Health (DOH) to prevent the outbreak of dengue which means Search and Destroy or to destroy all the possible breeding source of dengue mosquitoes by cleaning the surroundings. Residents are also advise to dispose of cans, water containers, bottles, flower vases and plastic cups where mosquitoes usually breed. Self Protection by wearing jogging pants, long sleeves and by using mosquito repellant lotion, mosquito nets or the installation of door and window screens. Seek Immediate Treatment, residents are advise to go to the nearest health center or hospital for check up if any member of the families have high fever for 2-7 days, have headache and experience eye strain and muscle pain, vomiting, loss of appetite and weakness and Say “No” to Indiscriminate Fogging. Fogging gives false security among the residents for it does not kill the dengue mosquitoes and it is in fact hazardous to the health of the people.
Aguilar pointed out that ‘prevention’ of the outbreak of killer-diseases such as dengue, leptospirosis, diarrhea, hepatitis A and typhoid fever is the focus of his administration’s health campaign.
He further stressed that prevention through widespread information-dissemination and community-wide health education and cleanliness is an effective way to control the outbreak of any killer-disease.
Las Piñas has more than 27 modern health centers supervised by competent doctors and other medical staff and equipped with health facilities and equipment.
The center has also sufficient supplies of vaccines and medicines. (end)
