This letter drives me to a threshold when everything else was exhausted (the deciding point after I solicited the thoughts of a ranking Diocesan clergy.)I was pooped very weary by this situation of an unending harassment suffered by pedestrians that lived under force and intimidation from our oppressive street officer. Since 2007 to recent times, this also doubts the impartiality and accountability shown by important community authorities (influential figures.)How the high-handed street administrator injured the lives mostly of the low-status bona fide residents. The upper class residing on our street Emilio Abello used force to close permanently the gate to date (welding the gate) exposing us to more harm if an incident of fire and health risks happen. That access is a road basic to students and commuting pedestrians in a rush daily and the family living near treating it as “fastest health emergency-fire-exit and our “attendant passage” in our regular day-to-day life” Since the access is lawful passage where there are public institutions that should be accessible to plain citizens (public health center within reach, public police station, public barangay, school institutions and passing entry/exit of public tricycles while on the other open street access there’s a public church or a safe access to use during floods. Do we backslide the values of our democracy and laws when the privileged members can hold the benefits and control every individual freedom?
I’m 54 years old with a handicap --a leg tibia fracture and knee injury, and my age restrained me from stressful routine since health problems common to ageing (poor eyesight, asthma, hypertension and sometimes lapses in memory.)In this reckoning times of feeling the conditions of those with disability: Priority for the handicap and elderly—the street leader & BFRVA dishonored and rashly harmed pedestrians.
Our complaint is the burden of using the padlocks, keys when my neighborhood constructed a barbed gate which for a longest time became a nuisance to families especially pedestrians. As a brief story the area used to be a community of informal settlers but today it’s cleaned-up after the process of demolition. I have accorded to affluent neighbors for sometime my goodwill and for a long time we, comprising families of pedestrians yielded to the whims of more fortunate neighbors even that all of them have high fences, trained watch- dogs, helpers, day-guard security, well-lighted LPC friendship lamps and CCTV camera.
In the past, I voiced out a cry we are legitimate homeowners but treated like captive animals when they permanently closed the gate, solid chains placed on the man gate, various times of threats changing padlocks and keys without any warning like we all are in maximum prison security. My family and other pedestrians could not withstand the changing bad weather conditions as we lock and unlock the gate. Lately the circumstance on my health, simple freedom to enjoy the best of my “tomorrows” in spite of health issues injured knee and leg, failing eyesight and absent-mindedness in locating the key. The spread of diseases from hand contact as we use the keys, padlock and touch the gate can put us to more health risks especially HiNi, meningococcemia, flu and other contagious viruses.
The past experience of my youngest son on July this year going on an errand to the store along BF Resort drive Dulo, a crime almost killed his life but he kept running it’s good the gate was open , if that was closed the criminal could corner him at the gate. The very dark Dulo-BF Resort Drive road needs Meralco lighting as it becomes a hotspot for crimes. I wish the political leaders take cognizance police visibility and putting augmented security can resolve this perennial security risk.
If anyone can wonder ( “care?”is a perfected word) that there’s one or five inside a Christian community whose conditions and welfare are being offended/forsaken, would you selfishly walk away to disconnect and distance yourselves because you’re confined to your glass tower? How can anyone fail to see we ought to blend with everyone in a society (no social barrier) and set our sights human right for meaningful/sense of probity extends in our actions?
Jaded and banned for the longest time to mingle and blend with ordinary people (common tao giving services) because the street official treated them without probity or they are annoyed with the hard work of authorized village magtataho, maggugulay, meryenda plying vendors, ice cream vendors, utility men (meralco etc) all the rest fighting poverty for small honest earnings.
I looked at the distaste, bias and wrong religious values especially when the whole country blabber on "Priority to people with disability, elderly " And we belong to one parish knowing we learn in practice good Christianity sometimes our inner being is clogged by earthly possessions and selfish deeds.
Who can we trust not to be law-breakers and make the laws empowered the suffering and the distressed? This barangay engenders its mission to protect individual freedom ( I saw Kap Sanchez Mission statement) and the “warm and care” of our municipality’s mission statement.
Is this a society who values freedom and love for the suffering and distressed? Our condition being aggrieved does not abate in time likewise never ends to seize our rights. There’s the high percentage of poor population and the kind of values the rich in our street had offended and oppressed the people who also became their helpers and servants. They would compel their servants to take the long path to the sari-sari-store/bakery and make our students risks life in crime situation to quickly run for their life without hazards of a shut gate. This habitat of abuse isn’t good for Filipino race living in compliance to laws because brazen disobedience of the majority rich on our street Emilio Abello St.BFRV is a vulgar violation of concrete laws. Wealth is a peril to possess but don’t make it perilous to ordinary and simple lifestyle of majority of common “tao” Democracy is not a one-shot deal based with only the flavor for the rich.
Batas Pambansa 344 (Accessibility law) PD 1216 and PD1185 and disrespect to human rights under our Constitution. Force and intimidation have been diffused because of the gate, please remove this not only physical deterrent , a shackle to freedom to travel, barrier, fire hazard, nuisance but a rancid note to moral and church principles. We as believers are forged to one faith, in God we trust!
